KY EPSCoR exists to stimulate sustainable improvements in the Commonwealth’s R&D capacity. Working in collaboration with federal EPSCoR and IDeA programs, KY EPSCoR’s mission is to advance the Commonwealth’s science and engineering capabilities for discovery, innovation and knowledge-based prosperity. Each year, a conference is hosted to communicate topics of interest and importance to Kentucky's research community.
This Year's Conference continues to underscore the importance of last year’s theme of “Aiming Science for Impact”. Federal research funding programs are placing renewed emphasis on extracting societal and economic benefits from research investments. New federal programs provide translational and technology commercialization focused funding. While researchers are not necessarily expected to have entrepreneurial interests, they are increasingly required, in order to be competitive, to better articulate research impacts and define collaborative pathways that will extract tangible value from their research efforts.
Conference presenters will discuss the evolving forces on academic researchers and the opportunities they offer. Case histories will be provided of academic researchers who have been early capturers of these new evolving federal award programs in the hope that their experiences can help seed new opportunities for the Commonwealth.
Research Presentations The status of selected Kentucky research efforts will be the subject of presentations, posters and videos. Individuals who have received funding from KY EPSCoR, NASA KY, NIH-IDeA or USDA-AFRI are especially encouraged to submit an abstract of their work for poster and/or 3 minute video presentation. Five abstracts will be selected from the submissions for authors to give brief oral presentations and up to three videos will be selected for showing to the main audience. The research that you do is important !! and the conference is a great opportunity to communicate it, as well as, learn from others. Click on the tabs above for details.
A Request for Videos adds a new communication format to the conference. Videos are quickly becoming a very effective communication tool for researchers. Videos submitted may be used in other venues in addition to this conference.
A Change in Format - Afternoon Workshops In response to requests, the afternoon breakout will provide three workshop topics tailored to help you be more competitive in obtaining research funding. One will provide an insider's approach to competitive proposal writing. Another will address methods for channeling research for commercialization. And the third will provide an interactive, session on the art of communicating science effectively to varying audiences through multiple mediums including active interview, written form and video.
Who Should Attend ? Individuals actively conducting or interested in scientific research are encouraged to attend. The conference provides a good forum to renew old or develop new collaborations and relationships with other researchers. It is the intent of the KY EPSCoR program that annual conferences plant seeds of opportunity. Academic, government, and private sector research administrators will likewise benefit from the information presented. Registration for the conference is open to the public.
Deadline for regular registration: Friday, October 4, 2013
