Recent advances in molecular biology and our understanding of overall gene expression are revolutionizing the way we view modern agricultural production. While many of the improvements in livestock productivity in the last 100 years have resulted from an understanding of basic genetics, new tools that allow for an understanding of the epigenetic control of gene expression are now available. Commercial application of these tools promises to dramatically change our production management schemes, add value to our food products and revolutionize our view of both human and animal nutrition.

The CNMS is a nanoscale science research center funded by the Scientific User Facilities Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences.      Nucleus – Putting Innovation on the Fast Track in Louisville

Nucleus: Kentucky’s Innovation Center, a subsidiary of the University of Louisville Foundation and the economic development arm of the University of Louisville, provides many services to support entrepreneurs and innovation. From offering continuum-of-space options, to sector specific networking opportunities, to entrepreneurship training, to assistance in identifying and applying for funding opportunities, and more, Nucleus helps drive innovation. This presentation will briefly describe the services provided by Nucleus with a focus on the Kauffman FastTrac® TechVenture™ entrepreneurship training program.


     WKU NOVA Center: Nondestructive Analysis Using the Large Chamber
     Scanning Electron Microscope

The Western Kentucky University (WKU) Nondestructive Analysis (NOVA) Center has been established within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The acquisition of the Large Chamber-Scanning Electron Microscope (LC-SEM) has positioned WKU as the only university in North America with an instrument of this type. As envisioned, the NOVA Center will be a national focal point for nondestructive measurements. The reach of this Center is to provide analytical services, by being the only educational institution within North America to offer non-destructive SEM analysis. Transdisciplinary studies will be presented that highlight the extensive suite of materials characterization techniques available at the WKU NOVA Center.

     Research Opportunities and Challenges for Achieving Carbon Neutrality
    in the Global Aluminum Industry

The aluminum industry is vital to Kentucky’s economy providing over 15,000 high paying directs and supporting manufacturing jobs with $4.5 billion of annual shipment. The current carbon foot print of the global aluminum industry is estimated at 500 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq), representing about 1.7 % of global emissions from all sources. This presentation outlines an integrated and quantifiable plan along with resultant research opportunists and challenges for achieving “carbon neutrality” in the global aluminum industry by advocating several steps such as : using “greener” energy grids, reducing energy intensity of manufacturing processes, deploying products in energy saving applications , diverting material from landfills and urban mining from “ aluminum - rich landfills ”.

Mr. Gardner will outline Novelis’ reasons for incorporating a sustainability platform into their business: to drive value, to align with fast-growing requirements from stakeholders, and because with new products and processes, sustainability is the future license to operate. He will also discuss Noelis' 2020 targets, the approaches they are taking to reach those goals and highlight their activities in Kentucky.

     Infrastructure Improvements to Support Energy and Environmental

     Research in Kentucky
          - Jeff Mossey, Program Administrator, KY NSF EPSCoR


KY NSF EPSCoR recently gathered ideas from the state’s research community and implemented a process for developing a new proposal to NSF (award period: 2013-2018). The proposal will establish focused and integrated activities and programs that relate to a strategically selected theme—energy and environmental research in the Commonwealth. This talk will briefly outline and explain the program’s activities to coordinate this process, as well as include information about funding opportunities.


    Developing Kentucky Research Expertise and Collaborations with NASA
- Suzanne Weaver Smith, Director, NASA Kentucky Space Grant & EPSCoR


The NASA Kentucky Space Grant Consortium and EPSCoR Programs are NASA's higher education programs in Kentucky. Space Grant competitively awards Faculty Research Initiation Awards, Graduate Fellowships, Undergraduate Scholarships and Internships, and Student Team Projects to build Kentucky's faculty, student and industry expertise and initiate NASA collaborations. NASA EPSCoR awards Research Infrastructure Development Grants, Multi-Year Research Area Awards and Conference/Workshop Grants to build infrastructure and further strengthen research relationships with NASA. NASA Kentucky also addresses the STEM education pipeline with targeted pre-college teacher and general education projects. Overall, pathways of opportunities are created for faculty and students to develop research expertise and collaborations with NASA. This talk will further elaborate on the funding and educational opportunities mentioned for each program.
